Community Service – Wills for Veterans
The Prince William County Bar Association worked with the PWC Area Agency on Aging, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7589 and the American Legion to sponsor the first “Wills for Veterans” Program (WFV) by a local bar association in the state of Virginia. Through the WFV Program, local veterans and their spouses are given the opportunity to have simple wills, advanced medical directives and durable powers of attorney prepared for them and their spouses, free of charge.
The Program was developed to assist veterans who are not on active duty or who did not retire from the military and therefore are not eligible for legal assistance from the military.
To implement the WFV program, local attorneys are trained in how to prepare the documents and education sessions are held to educate veterans on the importance of having such documents in place. In 2015, 66 veterans and spouses were assisted through this program and efforts are underway to host another program in the fall of 2017.
The PWC Area Agency on Aging received an Aging Achievement Award from the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging for the 2015 Wills for Veterans Program.
